A matched pair of authentic Victorian encaustic tiles by Minton & Co. of Stoke-upon-Trent, both bearing the impressed “MINTON & CO. / PATENT / STOKE UPON TRENT” mark on the reverse. These two pieces represent exactly how Minton tiles were meant to be seen together — the square field tile paired with its companion border frieze, just as they would have been installed in a Victorian church, public hall, or fine residence.
The field tile carries the classic Gothic Revival pattern: interlocking ogee frames set against an ebonized ground, filled with oakleaf clusters & small florette rosettes rendered in warm buff clay. The border tile features an elegant cartouche of acanthus scrollwork & interlaced Gothic ornament — white ground, black center, with pinstripe edging — designed to frame exactly this kind of installation. Together they give you a complete picture of what Victorian encaustic flooring actually looked like in context.
Minton & Co. was the preeminent tile manufacturer of the era & the firm responsible for the iconic floors of the Palace of Westminster. Their Gothic Revival designs were developed in close collaboration with architect A.W.N. Pugin, and tiles bearing this impressed patent mark date to the height of that partnership. Both pieces show honest age wear & surface patina appropriate to architectural salvage of this age. Field tile is approximately 6” x 6”; border tile approximately 6” x 3”.

The coloring on the tile is slightly worn but the colors and designs are still very clear. The straight edges on each piece are rough and no longer clean straight lines, but still fit together beautifully. The Minton & Co. branding is still unbelievably clear on the backside of both pieces. less
