This original exhibition poster, produced by the Tate Gallery in London, features one of David Hockney’s most celebrated works, Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy, which is in the permanent collection of this museum. Painted between 1970 and 1971, the work is part of Hockney’s renowned series of double portraits from the late 1960s and 1970s, known for their realistic yet simplified depictions of friends and family within their domestic settings. The painting features textile designer Celia Birtwell, who would become one of Hockney’s most important muses and a central figure in his portrait work throughout his career, alongside her husband, fashion designer Ossie Clark, with one of their cats, Percy, perched statuesquely on Clark’s lap, looking out the window. The portrait captures the couple in their Notting Hill Gate flat shortly after their wedding, at which Hockney served as best man. Widely regarded as one of Hockney's early masterpieces, the work played a pivotal role in establishing his international fame. This high-quality lithograph poster, with its vibrant colors, subtle tonal variations, and exquisite detail, has become a sought-after collectible among Hockney’s posters.
