A very special collectible, this original vintage poster—hand-signed in pencil by the artist—features Helen Frankenthaler’s legendary 1952 painting Mountains and Sea, created when she was just 23 years old. Widely regarded as a landmark work, Mountains and Sea helped establish Frankenthaler as one of the most influential figures of the second generation of Abstract Expressionism. It was the first painting in which she employed her groundbreaking soak-stain technique, pouring thinned pigment directly onto raw canvas laid on the floor to create luminous, shifting washes of atmospheric color that evoke the memory and sensation of landscape rather than its literal form. This poster is an exceptionally high-quality print, produced on heavy, smooth, crisp white paper that beautifully captures the painting’s delicate, fluid transitions and shifting fields of color. It was published in 1989 by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, for the exhibition Twentieth-Century Art: Selections for the Tenth Anniversary of the East Building, the celebrated expansion designed by I.M. Pei.
