The Industrial Revolution brought wealth to the middle class whose standards of living of elegance and refinement rivaled the landed gentry. Their desire to enrich their homes with beautiful objects gave rise to the production of material objects of value. Sheffield, England was renowned for its high-quality silver-plated items, including strawberry baskets. These baskets were designed to elegantly serve strawberries and often featured intricate designs with ornate handles and openwork.

This strawberry basket has a strawberry motif throughout. The swing handle has two strawberries with leaves, and strawberries and leaves on the outer over the intricate wire work surrounding the sprig of strawberries in the center. The basket is supported by three interesting bird like claw feet. There is no maker's mark and no doubt was greatly influenced by the silver baskets made by Sheffield. See less
