The series of 24 depict the trials and tribulations of an attractive widow in the Gilded Age, as designed by Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944). Gibson was a talented and successful commercial artist in the USA, with his work covering the decades between 1890-1920. The pen and ink sketches were titled “The Widow And Her Friends”; first published in Life Magazine and the artist’s own book in 1901. The depicted scenes are titled, expressing Gibson’s dry wit. The “Gibson Girl” became synonymous with the ideal modern woman; tall, elegant and independent. This series was made into a set of blue and white transfer ware earthenware plates by Royal Doulton circa 1902-1915. See less
