It truly captured the essence of the leaf with the upturn edges and the veins that radiate from the center of the leaf.
I can say the lotus flower, leaf and seed pod trigger good childhood memories. I do admire the potter's knowledge of the leaf even though he used a rich brown and black glazes that are similar to the Temmoku glazes that were developed by the Chinese potters in the 13th century and brought back to Japan by Zen monks. Temmoku glazes are pleasant to the eye, and the neutral colors can fit in any decor. The lotus leaf bowl can be used for Ikebana or any flower arrangements. It can stand well on its own as decorative object with the ceramic disks as accents. The potter signed his name and his mark is stamped at the bottom's edge.

I met this potter whose name I have forgotten at a show at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago. It was in the 2000's. His pottery was very artistic and unusual. This well potted Ikebana pot shows off his techniques and creativity. See less
