Trained as an architect at Penn State in the 1960s, David Phillips has had a long and productive relationship with sculpture. From the 1970s until 1998, it was more of a hobby; he produced only a handful of pieces per year. In 1998 that all changed; David was in a serious motorcycle accident and paralyzed from the waist down – that is when the productivity really exploded. David hired an assistant to hold the materials in place while he welded them together: found metal objects and machine stock, sheet metal and bolts and car parts. Never showing his work to the public until 2010, the sculptures decorated his 30-acre property in New Jersey. Every piece he produced was one of a kind, and his creativity and the joy he received from the act of making is apparent in all of his work.
