Referred to as "Batuan", carving is an important part of the Hindu-Buddhist culture and dates back to 255BC. Figures and statues were made to honor Hindu gods and deities. Passed down through generations, this figure is the result of hundreds of years of practice and knowledge, and was most probably made for a celebration or ceremony.

It is an an incredible work of art! It has been carved from a hard wood (most probably Teak or sandalwood) with intricate precision and has aged beautifully. Just look at her face - it has wonderful glaze / cracking that only age can bring.

She stands at just over 3 foot high (40") and is 6" wide, 10" depth. The base measures 6" x 5".
She weighs a very solid 15lb 4oz.

Dating back to the last quarter of the 20th century this statue is in good, if not perfect condition: Please note on the back (on her left hand side back) there is about 0.5 inch piece of wood missing on one of the straps "holding" the basket on her back (see pic). The strap in the same place on the other side of the basket appears to have some paint missing, revealing a white base (see pic).
And finally on her left hand side (on the side-front under her left arm) there is about a 0.5 inch of wood missing - also revealing white paint.
It must be noted these discrepancies are not immediately noticeable and in no way detract from the overall beauty of this piece.

Elsewhere, in general, she shows signs of age and wear as all great vintage pieces do. As mentioned, the paint and wood show signs of cracking/warping. She has been chiseled from a large chunk of hard wood. Natural wood mutates over time - it is just part of the natural process, and in this case it adds wonderfully to the authenticity and character of this piece. She has minor marks in places. Examine ALL the pictures closely. The pictures serve as a document to its condition. Also please note that whilst she stands freely on her own, she does "sway" a little, so I would advise standing her somewhere where she won't be knocked otherwise she might fall (backwards).
