This antique Chinese basin dates to the early 19th century and is beautifully hand-painted in the blue-and-white manner. Originally used as an incense burner or jardiniere, the porcelain bowl is potted to a shallow, rounded form with sides that swell outwards with a graceful curve.
The exterior is painted with cobalt underglaze atop a white slip field, brushed in a dark, indigo-blue hue with fantastic depth. Meandering scrollwork frames vignettes of narcissus flowers and peonies, a pairing that conveys a blessing of longevity, wealth and honor. Possibly also used as an incense burner, the antique vessel is wonderful today as a tabletop planter for houseplants or ikebana arrangements.
Restoration to minor losses on one side.
