This pair of hand carved window panels, made up of over a hundred pieces of carefully carved pieces and fit together with very clever joinery were purchased from a remote mountain village in Fujian. Many houses were built during the Ming Dynasty (CE 1368 - 1644) and demolished to make way for modernization. Old window panels were collected and sold as architectural salvage. My late husband happened to be visiting the village in the late 1990's and was intrigued by these panels with such unique construction, It took almost two years and many negotiations before the panels were first loaded on a truck on a long journey from the Fujian mountains to the coastal town of Jiangmen in Guangdong Province where they were loaded into a container for a sea voyage to Long Beach, California and continued its way by train train that was finally loaded on a flat bed truck and delivered to our warehouse in Chicago.
The use of joinery is well known and many wooden door and window panels are still made in this manner. However, the intricate ways and the myriads of small pieces, each shaped as a joint, were a unique artform created by Fujian woodcraftsmen a few hundred years. It can be considered as a lost art, to recreate this style of wood carving, even by machinery, the cost would still be astronomical today. The wood is indigenous to Fujian. China has not experienced the ice age so there are hundreds species of trees. Not know what type of wood this is does not require an apology.
To assign a Ming Dynasty 17th century date appears to be a stretch even though the houses where they came from were built in the Ming Dynasty. But considering this is a single pair, that belonged to a big house where there would be more windows. Constructing these intricately carved windows would require considerable costs, and the strength of the Chinese rule went on a decline after the end of the 18th century. So an 18th century date would be reasonable.
This pair is one of a small number of panels that stands out among the panels with the common geometric designs. It actually has a rather complicated patterns. On careful examination, each piece has raised edges that give the design a three dimensional quality. There is also a purpose for this design and it has to do with aerodynamics. Windows with is particular element draws air into the interiors at a much faster rate. It is a welcome relief for the sultry muggy hot summer days in Southeast China. The pair is very pretty and this is the first time it is offered for sale.
Fujian is one of the southern provinces of China but winter can be harsh. Thick paper would be glued to the back of the windows to keep the cold out.
