An exceptional Asian temple cast stone architectural frieze molding panel, a fragment of a band of running scroll ornamentation. Having whimsical scrollwork representing blowing wind or waves in the ocean, and mythological creatures, perhaps a dragon, grotesque griffin or sea monster. The characters in the center are likely ancient Asian hieroglyphics (ex Japanese kanji). The top side has a exposed joinery joint, a single dovetail cutout, used along with mortar to secure the panel to the temple. Circa 19th century or earlier.
This architectural salvaged building element is a wonderful display of history, mythology and religion. Minimalist in form and simple design, yet full of interest and intrigue, used as Victorian Gothic decor, sculptural folk art or a Far Eastern relic, this remarkable hand carved block is a quick way to add texture, character, sophisticated old world charm.
Will make a wonderful decorative object and conversation starter within your home or office.
Provenance:
Personal property of Genshiro Kawamoto. A Japanese real estate billionaire and avid art collector who owned numerous multi-million dollar properties in Hawaii and was building one of the most expensive homes in Hawaii prior to his tax evasion arrest, followed by prison sentence in Japan. He had bought multiple properties to convert into museums in order to display his personal decorative arts collection, but due to his legal and financial problems, his items were all auctioned off.
We acquired it in Maui from the dealer that purchased it directly from the estate.
