The Arctic Edge: Tapio Wirkkala's Sculptural 'Inari' Ice Glass Bowl
This striking, low-profile Glass Bowl is a key piece in the body of work created by Finnish design master Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985). Known as 'Inari' (Model 3543), this bowl was produced by the renowned Iittala glass factory between circa 1967–1981.
The bowl is masterfully mould-blown with a heavy, textured surface that deliberately mimics the rugged, irregular appearance of rough-cut ice or the icy formations of a frozen Arctic lake. It features an undulating, organic rim and is supported by several solid, stylized glass feet that resemble clusters of frozen droplets—a hallmark of Wirkkala's nature-inspired glass series.
This form directly references the northern region of Inari in Finnish Lapland, a desolate and beautiful wilderness that served as a profound source of inspiration for the artist's post-war modernist designs.
Historical Context: Nature as Design
Tapio Wirkkala was a pivotal figure in the international success of Finnish Mid-Century Modern design. He was celebrated for his ability to translate the raw, unspoiled elements of nature into mass-produced, functional art. The 'Inari' bowls and similar works like Ultima Thule and Jäänsärö (Iceberg) are often categorized as "Ice Glass" because of the deliberate technique of allowing the molten glass to create organic, textured surfaces by burning the wood molds.
The production of these pieces by Iittala utilized industrial techniques while retaining a strong connection to hand-craftsmanship and nature's geometry. The 'Inari' bowl is a sculptural statement that brought the powerful, silent beauty of the Finnish wilderness into the modern home.
