The pattern is printed and painted underglaze on ‘New Fayence’, an ivory-coloured earthenware. This body was first developed during the earlier Spode period, c.1826 - 1833 and continued to be used throughout the Copeland & Garrett period, c.1833 – 1847.
The body was often chosen for printed patterns which have added colours; your service is an example of this.
The pattern, which is number 5168, was first introduced by Spode c.1832 and obviously continued to be produced during the subsequent Copeland and Garrett period. The printed backstamp incorporating the words LATE SPODE was in fact in use throughout the entire Copeland and Garrett period. Therefore, the date of your service is between those dates, c.1833-47.
