This set of six vintage Minton majolica oyster plates presents a round, softly scalloped silhouette, with six smooth, triangular wells arranged like petals around a deep, circular center. Crafted from ceramic in the Victorian majolica tradition, each well is glazed in a luminous, glassy turquoise that glows with a clear, aquatic depth. The ridges between the wells are molded in relief with a rich, seabed-like tapestry: cream-white cockle and scallop shells, pale spiral whelks tipped with blush pink, and feathery strands of seaweed in celadon and jade, all set against a dark, pebbled chocolate-brown ground. At the heart of each plate, a deep emerald-green well is ringed by a border of tiny, overlapping white shells and beaded dots, framed in a warm, mottled brown rim. The relief is crisp and sculptural, and the colors remain vivid and saturated. The glaze is bright and fluid, pooling slightly in the recesses and catching the light along every curve. Witty, naturalistic, and distinctly maritime, the plates recall the opulent seaside entertaining of the Victorian dining room.
Display these plates stacked on a sideboard, in a plate rack, or on a wall for a vivid, collected effect, or use them to serve oysters, canapés, or small bites at a special gathering. They complement Victorian, Coastal, English Country, Grandmillennial, and Cottage interiors. To care for them, hand wash gently with mild soap and warm water, avoid soaking, dishwashers, and sudden temperature changes, and dry thoroughly to protect the glaze and applied relief. Each plate measures 9 inches (229 mm) wide, 9 inches (229 mm) deep, and 0.5 inches (13 mm) high. Condition is very good, with vibrant original glaze, minor age-appropriate crazing, well-preserved edges and surfaces, and no visible chips or cracks.
