Antique late 19th-century French-style Rococo Revival fireplace screen featuring a shaped beveled mirror within an ornate cast brass frame, circa 1880–1900. Equally attractive as a freestanding tabletop mirror on a bedroom dresser, French commode, or entryway console, its ornate brass frame and beveled glass offer decorative possibilities well beyond the fireplace.
The decorative frame features scrolling acanthus foliage, an elaborate openwork crest with integrated carrying handle, and gracefully shaped legs with foliate detailing. Originally gilt, the brass retains traces of its historic finish, now softened to a warm, naturally aged patina. The original-style beveled mirror adds depth and reflection to the distinctive shield-shaped form.
JUNE'S THOUGHTS
Originally intended as a decorative fireplace screen, I think this piece would make a fabulous tabletop mirror for a vanity, bedroom dresser, or antique French commode. I especially appreciate the graceful shape, ornate brass detailing, and softly aged finish. It's one of those wonderful antique pieces that invites a little imagination in how it can be used and displayed.
