At Turtle & Crane, we turn the past into stunning décor for today. This pair of vintage postmodern side chairs dates to the late 20th century and began in red and silver. They are built on the geometry of Memphis Milano and the Memphis Group, in the style of Ettore Sottsass: a triangular seat, tapered cone legs and a tall metal A-frame back. We newly painted the metal frames and oak legs in gold and upholstered both chairs new.
Three graduated discs rise up each back, covered in a green faux malachite print fabric in the style of Tony Duquette. The seats are ivory faux leather. The A-frame back is metal, and the tapered cone legs are turned oak. Crescent stretchers join the legs to the back frame, so each chair finishes as well from behind as it does from the front and can float away from a wall. They suit a dining table, a desk or a corner that needs an accent chair, and the pair reads as Pop Art as much as postmodern.
The Memphis collective took its name from the Bob Dylan song "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again." These chairs were refinished in Mobile, Alabama. They are unmarked and unattributed, made in the manner of Memphis Milano and not by its designers.
Each chair measures 21 inches wide, 20 inches deep and 43.5 inches tall, with a seat height of 19 inches. Sold as a pair.

The metal frames and oak legs have been newly painted in gold, and the seats and the three back discs have been newly upholstered in ivory faux leather and faux malachite fabric. Vintage pieces carry imperfections in the original and the newly applied finish. The finish is hand applied and varies from piece to piece, and mottling, brush texture, and variation in the gilding are part of the finish, not defects. Small nicks to the gold finish on the legs are visible in the photographs. Please review all photographs and dimensions before purchasing, and message us with any questions. less
