Surmounting the clock is a beautifully modelled lady in elaborate period dress, standing beside a pedestal supported by a classical putto or cherub. She holds a book in one hand while the other rests elegantly across her chest. The finely articulated costume, architectural elements and surrounding details demonstrate the accomplished modelling characteristic of quality french decorative bronzes of the period. Below, the substantial gilt-bronze case is profusely ornamented with scrolling acanthus leaves, flowers, shells, pierced rococo flourishes and a central floral basket. Sweeping feet and openwork scrolls give the clock an elegant silhouette despite its considerable visual presence. The original white enamel dial is set within a beaded gilt surround and displays black roman numerals with delicate hands. Two winding apertures indicate the traditional mechanical movement within. The quality of the casting is particularly apparent throughout the sculptural figure and deeply modelled base, while the warm gilt finish beautifully accentuates the relief decoration and intricate chasing. Complete with key and pendulum, the clock has been stored for a number of years and may benefit from a routine service before regular use. The enamel dial remains particularly well preserved. A substantial and highly decorative example of 19th-century french clockmaking, equally impressive as a functional timepiece or as a sculptural object for a mantel, console or important period interior.
