The clock is surmounted by a finely modelled seated female figure in classical dress, posed gracefully above the movement and accompanied by floral and symbolic ornament. Her flowing robes, softly rendered features and relaxed posture give the composition a distinctly Romantic character, while the darker bronze finish provides an attractive contrast with the gilded base below. The architectural case is exceptionally ornate, with scrolling Rococo-inspired foliage, acanthus decoration, pierced flourishes and richly cast gilt-bronze detailing. Two oval porcelain panels decorated with delicate floral sprays flank the central dial and add a refined decorative accent to the composition. The original white enamel dial displays black Roman numerals and elegant hands within a finely cast gilt surround. The movement is supplied with its key and pendulum. The clock winds and ticks but has not been tested for prolonged accuracy after a period in storage. As with many antique mechanical clocks of this age, a routine service is recommended before regular use. The bronze and ormolu surfaces display an attractive age-related patina, with minor rubbing, oxidation and surface variation consistent with the clock's considerable age. The enamel dial appears well preserved. A substantial and highly decorative example of French 19th-century clockmaking, equally impressive as a sculptural object and as a traditional mantel timepiece.
