The oval bowl is elaborately ornamented with scrolling foliage, floral garlands and classical masks. Particularly striking are the two finely modelled cherubic putti, each depicted holding cymbals and terminating in elongated, scrolling dolphin-like forms that create the sculptural handles. Their animated modelling gives the piece a wonderful sense of movement and theatricality. The bowl is raised upon an unusual central support entwined by a serpent, further embellished with delicate beaded detailing. Below, the substantial domed base is decorated with lion masks, foliate scrollwork and classical motifs, creating an exceptionally elaborate architectural composition. The gilt surface combines areas of softer matte finish with brighter highlights, emphasising the depth of the casting and finely worked decorative details. The overall design reflects the exuberance of French historicist decorative bronzes produced around the turn of the 20th century.
