The sculptural upper section depicts a seated female figure tenderly holding a child, finely modelled in dark patinated bronze and positioned before an architectural, grotto-like setting. A rosary descending from an open coffer introduces a subtle devotional element and adds further narrative interest to the composition. The circular white enamel dial is detailed with black Roman numerals and surrounded by an ornate gilt bezel. Twin winding apertures indicate a traditional mechanical movement, understood to be an eight-day movement striking on a bell, typical of quality French mantel clocks of the period. The movement is housed within an elaborate gilt bronze base conceived in the Rococo Revival taste, with sweeping acanthus scrolls, pierced ornament and richly modelled architectural details. Particularly attractive are the inset porcelain plaques decorated with delicate floral sprays, introducing touches of colour against the warm gilded surface. The contrast between the burnished gilt bronze, dark patinated figural group and painted porcelain gives the clock considerable visual depth and presence. Its combination of horology, sculpture and decorative art exemplifies the elaborate mantel clocks produced in France for sophisticated interiors during the 19th century. A substantial and highly decorative antique suitable for a mantelpiece, console or collection of French clocks, gilt bronzes and 19th-century decorative arts.
