The clock follows the elegant classical portico form characteristic of French horology of the period. Four slender Roman Doric columns with engine-turned gilt capitals and bases support the projecting upper entablature, creating a beautifully proportioned architectural silhouette. The deep black ebonised finish provides a dramatic contrast with the richly gilded bronze ornament. The upper lintel is centred by an elaborate ormolu mount depicting a basket overflowing with flowers, surrounded by scrolling foliage and decorative motifs. A corresponding foliate mount embellishes the plinth below, giving the composition a pleasing sense of symmetry. At the centre is a circular engine-turned silvered brass dial with black Roman numerals and elegant pierced blued-steel hands. The dial is surrounded by an impressive cast ormolu bezel richly decorated with flowers and foliage. The clock is fitted with an eight-day counterwheel movement striking on a bell, incorporating an anchor escapement. The backplate is stamped 948. Below hangs an especially decorative gridiron pendulum, terminating in a large gilt floral rosette bob and complemented by an ornamental yoke. The substantial rectangular plinth rests upon compressed bun feet, completing the restrained yet luxurious appearance associated with the Louis Philippe period. The clock retains its key and pendulum. Having been stored for several years, a professional service is recommended prior to regular use. An impressive example of 19th-century French decorative horology, equally suited to a collection of antique clocks or as a commanding architectural accent for a mantel, console or library interior.
