Moulded pine branches with pendulous cones and slender needles form a running radial wreath across each shallow glass dish. Produced in Sunderland by James A. Jobling and Company under pattern number 5000, this design—commonly catalogued as Fircone or Fir Cone—embodies the geometric naturalism characteristic of British Art Deco tableware. Each plate is pressed in translucent jade green glass that displays a delicate, semi-opaque misting in the relief areas while retaining clear transmission through the flatter body. When exposed to ultraviolet light, the glass reacts with an intense, vivid green fluorescence, confirming the uranium content typical of 1930s green pressings from this factory. The dishes are formed with a shallow, circular central well surrounded by a raised inner boundary that separates the smooth base from the relief-decorated rim. The underside carries the crisp intaglio mouldings that present in smooth, rounded relief on the upper surface, keeping the interior functional while providing tactile surface texture.
Sized for tea, dessert, or side service, each plate measures approximately 17.5 to 18 cm in diameter. Sets of six matching examples in this decorative colourway remain uncommon survivors, retaining their original surface lustre without clouding or dishwashing damage. Pattern: Fircone (Jobling Pattern No. 5000) Material: Uranium-bearing pressed glass Diameter: 17.5 cm to 18 cm Quantity: Six plates.
