This exceptional circa 1800 French Empire mantel clock is a richly sculptural example of early 19th-century French decorative arts. Crafted from finely cast bronze with an original fire-gilt ormolu finish, the clock combines classical architecture, mythological imagery and a traditional mechanical movement in an impressive single composition.
The upper section is dominated by a graceful representation of Diana, shown in flowing classical drapery and accompanied by sculptural swans. She holds a vessel within the elaborate composition, creating an almost fountain-like arrangement that gives the clock movement and visual depth.
The white enamel clock dial is framed by two classical columns decorated with neoclassical ornamentation, reinforcing the architectural character associated with French Empire design. Roman numerals provide a crisp contrast against the richly gilded bronze.
The substantial lower base is equally decorative, featuring a finely modelled mythological relief with classical figures and putti. Together with the swans, columns and sculptural figure above, these details create a highly narrative piece that can be appreciated from close range as both a clock and a work of decorative sculpture.
