Stately but … Read more George III Oak tall clock of the late 1700s in a dark oak case by William Smith, London. Stately but not intimidating, the carved dentil crest is above a molded and arched door, flanked by classic columns with bronze fittings. The theme is repeated with rather extraordinary oversized Corinthian type acanthus leaf caps. At center is an arched top and banded door resting above a footed base with a central panel.

Most unusual and important to this clock is it not only strikes the hour but strikes the half hour as well, which is a seldom found feature on tall clocks of this era. Note the engraved brass dial which indicates the 18th century age of this piece. There is a dial with a second hand as well as an additional hand at the crest which indicates whether you want the bell to be silent or striking. See less
