A beautifully modeled Jennings Brothers equestrian desk clock, bringing the character of a traditional sporting library to the desktop. Two expressive horse heads peer over a textured stable door beside an ornate clock, creating a miniature architectural scene with both sculptural presence and practical purpose.
The asymmetrical composition rewards close inspection: individually defined manes and bridles, simulated wood grain across the stable façade, floral relief surrounding the dial, and scrolling ornament carried into the shaped base. Warm gold and bronze tones contrast with the darker horses, emphasizing the depth of the casting. Two shallow compartments provide space for pens and small desk essentials, integrating the timepiece into a decorative desk stand.
Founded in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1890, Jennings Brothers manufactured ornamental metalwork ranging from clocks and desk accessories to bookends, statuettes, and jewelry caskets. The firm developed an extensive decorative vocabulary, including patented Art Nouveau clock-case designs, and marketed finishes under names including “J.B. Ormolu Gold” and “Nouveau Bronze.” A New York salesroom opened in 1906, reflecting the company’s reach beyond its Connecticut manufacturing base.
This example bears the Jennings Brothers manufacturing inscription on the rear clock plate and the cast mark J.B. 282 underneath. Its richly detailed surfaces illustrate the appeal of American decorative art metal: functional household objects designed to offer the visual interest of small-scale sculpture. The mechanical clock has an Arabic numeral dial, a subsidiary seconds dial, and rear winding and setting controls.
Stylistically consistent with the early twentieth century, the piece recalls an era when ornamental desk accessories brought individuality to correspondence tables, home offices, and libraries. The equestrian subject lends itself especially well to English country and sporting interiors.
Place it on a leather-topped writing desk, beside a stack of clothbound books, or against the warmth of a mahogany secretary. Its sculptural horses, aged metallic finish, and intimate scale offer the collected character associated with Ralph Lauren-inspired rooms.
Acquired from an estate in Northern Virginia.
