This impressive circa 1860–1869 French mantel clock by S. Marti et Cie is a refined example of Napoleon III / Second Empire decorative arts. Crafted from richly detailed gilt bronze, the clock combines sculptural ornamentation with a quality mechanical movement and retains its original gilded surface with a naturally developed antique patina.
The architectural bronze case has a bold yet balanced composition. A distinctive rope-form border surrounds the circular dial, while the upper section is crowned by an unusual sculptural ornament inspired by Napoleon’s bicorne hat, giving the clock an immediately recognizable character.
The original gilt-bronze surface has been carefully cleaned rather than refinished, preserving the warm variations and patina developed over more than a century.
At the center is a classical white enamel dial displaying both Roman and Arabic numerals. The crisp dial provides an elegant contrast against the richly gilded bronze case.
