Pair of antique French Louis XV style carved walnut fauteuil armchairs, newly upholstered in a large-scale Jacobean Tree of Life–style … Read more Pair of antique French Louis XV style carved walnut fauteuil armchairs, newly upholstered in a large-scale Jacobean Tree of Life–style botanical with coordinating leopard-print seats.

The walnut frames have carved shell and foliate crests, serpentine arms, shaped aprons and cabriole legs ending in scroll feet. Curving X-stretchers meet at a carved floral rosette.

The upholstery is especially well done. The botanical, in warm red, green and cream, was cut from the same bolt for the front and reverse of each back. A different motif from the repeat is centered on each side: the principal bloom on the front and a flowering bouquet on the back, so the chairs look finished from every angle. The seats are covered in a small-scale raspberry and gold leopard print, trimmed with green passementerie.

The antique walnut brings warmth and history, and the bold textiles give the pair a fresh, designer point of view. They work well in a living room, library, bedroom or sitting area.

Acquired from an estate at the Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

JUNE'S THOUGHTS
What I love most about this pair is the upholstery. Rather than treating the antique frames too seriously, someone chose a wonderful large-scale botanical for both the front and back, then paired it with a small leopard print on the seats. It gives these traditional French chairs a lot more personality. And because the backs are as pretty as the fronts, you can float them in the middle of a room instead of pushing them against a wall.
