A striking pair of vintage Harry Bertoia Diamond Chairs for Knoll International, retaining their original mustard-gold upholstery and Knoll International textile labels. Designed in 1952, the Diamond Chair expresses Bertoia’s sculptural approach to furniture through a remarkably fluid shell of welded steel wire. Its expansive seat and slender supporting base create a composition that remains visually compelling from every angle.
The mustard upholstery is central to this pair’s character. Its warm golden color and textured weave provide a rich contrast to the black metal frames, emphasizing the sweeping contours of the seats and their distinctive diamond-shaped silhouette. Viewed from behind, the exposed wire lattice reveals the geometry of Bertoia’s design, giving the chairs an architectural presence suited to placement within an open room.
The retained labels identify Knoll International, Inc., New York. The 1952 date refers to the introduction of the design; the manufacturing date of this particular pair has not been established other than JAN 24 marked on one label.
Offered together, the chairs would make a distinctive addition to a Mid-Century Modern living room, architectural residence, collector’s library, or conversation area. Their saturated color lends warmth to restrained interiors, while their sculptural form works equally well alongside other postwar designs or as a focal point in a more eclectic setting.
Each chair measures approximately 33.5 inches wide, 28.25 inches deep, and 30 inches high, with a seat height of 16.5 inches. Offered as a pair of two chairs.
