The elaborate … Read more Exceptional late 19th-century English Aesthetic Movement writing desk crafted from richly patinated burnt bamboo and decorated lacquered panels. The elaborate design features a central beveled mirror, delicate bamboo scrollwork, raised side shelves, a central drawer with brass hardware, and decorative panels with Asian-inspired botanical motifs.

The writing surface incorporates a dark inset writing panel, while drop-front side compartments open to reveal fitted interior storage. The combination of bamboo construction, lacquer decoration, asymmetrical details, and Japanese-inspired ornamentation beautifully reflects the Anglo-Japanese influence associated with the Aesthetic Movement. A highly decorative and functional period piece with wonderful architectural presence.

Condition:
Good antique condition, consistent with age and use. The desk retains a rich, naturally aged patina throughout. Visible wear includes surface scratches, scuffs, finish loss, cracking and flaking to portions of the lacquered panels, along with other age-related imperfections. Some areas show small losses and wear to decorative surfaces and trim. Mirror shows minor age-related wear. One side of the desk is missing a small section of the decorative bamboo / rattan trim, as shown in the photos. Structurally presents well overall.
