History: The Lux Clock Mfg. Co.
Founded in 1912 by Paul Lux, his wife Caroline, and their sons in Waterbury, Connecticut—the historic heart of American clockmaking While big companies focused on traditional, plain timepieces - Lux carved out a niche specializing in affordable, high-quality, and incredibly creative novelty clocks.
By the 1930s, Lux became world-renowned for its beautifully decorated boudoir, desk, and mantel timepieces. Their reliable, compact mechanical movements were so well-regarded that other major brands, such as Westclox and General Electric, frequently purchased Lux movements to house in their own cased designs.
The "Blossom Time" Model & Historical Context
Introduced in the late 1920s, the Blossom Time model captured the era's obsession with "Chinoiserie" and oriental-inspired romantic aesthetics. Released during the height of the Art Deco movement, this specific model features a beautifully stylized layout. It was marketed primarily as a decorative accent clock designed to add a splash of color and elegance to the home.
Special Note: The back of the clock is handwritten script with the date "Sept 10, 1930." It is a fantastic window into its history—likely marking the exact date it was originally purchased, gifted, or serviced.
Materials & Craftsmanship
The Case: Constructed from a heavy, pressed composition molded material (a mix of wood composite and binders typical of the era). This material is known as "Syrocowood". This gives the clock a substantial, solid weight compared to modern plastics.
The Finish: Hand-painted with an arched bridge, multi-colored floral and blossom motif. The artwork frames the clock dial beautifully, featuring delicate vines and vibrant contrast detailing.
The Dial & Hands: Features an elegant, easy-to-read analog dial with classic stylized Arabic numerals matching the typography of the era.
The Movement: Features a robust, die-cut brass mechanical gear system. This is a spring-driven mechanism built to last for generations with proper care.
Condition Report (Please Read Carefully)
Mechanical Status: The mechanical movement is untested, and its functional working condition is unknown, as the winding key is not included. The winding arbor and gears are intact on the back, making it a prime candidate for a collector with a spare key or a simple horological restoration.
Cosmetic Condition: Beautiful vintage condition with gorgeous, authentic patina. The hand-painted floral face displays excellent color.
Noted Imperfections: There are tiny, minor surface imperfections that are fully documented and shown in the high-resolution photos. The case is sturdy with no major structural cracks.
