Made in England during the Walter Moorcroft period, this classic floral pattern was developed for production in the postwar years and became one of the pottery's recognizable mid-20th-century designs.

The rounded baluster form provides an especially good surface for the decoration, with large clematis blossoms and foliage continuing around the body rather than presenting as a single frontal design.

Raised tube-lined outlines give the flowers definition and dimension beneath the glossy glaze, while the dark blue ground makes the muted rose, plum and green palette particularly effective.

A handsome example of vintage English art pottery with enough color to stand alone on a bookshelf, console or chest, while its relatively compact scale also makes it particularly good grouped with blue-and-white porcelain, English ceramics or other Moorcroft pieces.

COLLECTOR'S NOTE
Clematis has an interesting place in Moorcroft history. The design dates to the William Moorcroft era around 1939 but became a regular production pattern under his son Walter beginning in the postwar period. The combination of raised tube-lined decoration and saturated cobalt ground is characteristic of the pottery's highly recognizable mid-century work. The underside bears the impressed MOORCROFT and MADE IN ENGLAND factory marks.
