Exceptional 19th-century French Sèvres porcelain heraldic cabinet plate, produced during the Louis-Philippe era and bearing period Château des Tuileries marks.
This striking plate features a deep cobalt blue border surrounded by a wide elaborate raised gilt decoration and intricate hand-applied Sèvres gilding. The white porcelain center displays an impressive gilt, silvered and cobalt blue heraldic coat of arms, with two rampant lions supporting a shield beneath a helmet and dual crests.
A banner beneath the armorial bears the Latin motto:
“UBI LIBERTAS IBI PATRIA”
“Where liberty is, there is my country.”
The reverse bears several important period markings, including the oval “S.46” Sèvres mark, indicating the porcelain body dates to 1846, together with the red “Doré à Sèvres 48” mark indicating the plate was decorated/gilded at Sèvres in 1848. It also bears the distinctive crowned “Château des Tuileries” palace mark.
The combination of the Sèvres manufacturing and decorating marks, Château des Tuileries mark, elaborate armorial decoration, cobalt ground and extensive gilding makes this a particularly desirable example of mid-19th-century French decorative porcelain.
