Acquired in Denmark, the chest features a … Read more This 18th century Danish commode blends Dutch Rococo influences with historic Scandinavian craftsmanship. Acquired in Denmark, the chest features a serpentine block-front facade with four graduated drawers. The exterior features premium burr walnut veneers with warm patina and natural grain patterns. Cabinetmakers of this era only used expensive veneers on visible surfaces and relied on locally sourced timber for the internal structural elements.

Standing firmly on traditional carved bracket feet, this substantial chest offers historic proportions and functional storage. Heavy gauge side handles were routinely used in the 1700s so servants or owner could move furniture between rooms. There are likely restorations made over the last 200+ years to maintain the integrity of the piece. A new skeleton key was just made to facilitate the opening of the drawers although the bottom two may not actually fully lock. The drawer fronts feature antique cast-brass keyhole escutcheons that double as decorative centerpieces. The update is common for 18th century furniture and the current brass plates seamlessly make the old structural holes from the front preserving a beautiful clean presentation. See less
