The pencil’s internal mechanisms are quite involved—we’ve included a diagram so you can imagine how they work. The Victorians had an object for everything, and the magic pencil would have been worn on a watch chain. The pencil extends by pulling on the back of the cylinder and then retracts to become more compact. Twisting on the tip of the pencil extends the lead for writing. Magic pencils came in many different designs, from simple to ornate. This one is sleek and streamlined, with a simple cylindrical capsule. The extension has engine turned ribbing and a mark for 14k gold. The pendant has a nice large bail that will fit on a thicker chain or on a dog clip.

The pencil is 2 1/2” when closed and extends to be 4” (not including the bail, which is 8.65 x 6.85 mm). The pencil is quite heavy and weighs 18.65 grams. Marked 14k gold. It looks great on a simple chain and can be worn as a pendant by either a man or a woman. It is a great gift and makes a perfect “man-tique”. See less
