Elevate your tablescape or mantelpiece with this striking pair of mid-20th-century figural candlesticks by the renowned Fostoria Glass Company. Cast in a mesmerizing frosted olive green satin glass, each candle holder beautifully portrays the biblical figure Rebecca elegantly carrying a water urn upon her shoulder. This timeless composition stands on an ornately detailed, tiered round base. Originally modeled after a classic 1870s Victorian design by Bakewell, Pears & Co., these specific pieces were reproduced by Fostoria between 1964 and 1970 for the prestigious Henry Ford Museum. They feature a subtle acid-etched texture that diffuses light with a soft, matte glow. This exceptional pair brings a sophisticated touch of American Classical style and Hollywood Regency charm to any contemporary or traditional space. Fostoria is one of the Elegant Glass Companies that was in business from 1887-1986. Fostoria is considered one of the premier producers of "Elegant glass," a category of vintage American glassware that stands far above standard machine-made Depression glass in terms of craftsmanship, clarity, and finish. While standard Depression glass was mass-produced by machines and often left with rough seams or bubbles, Fostoria’s elegant glass was completely handmade, molded, or blown, and meticulously hand- finished). After being removed from the mold, pieces were reheated ("fire-polished") to smooth away rough edges and mold seams, leaving a flawless, glossy finish. Flat-bottomed Fostoria pieces feature a perfectly ground and polished base rim, resulting in a smooth, slightly frosted, flat band that sits flush on tables. Fostoria was renowned for its top-tier acid-etching and needle-etching techniques. Designers achieved deep, intricate Art Deco and floral patterns (like Versailles or Navarre) that machine-pressed glass could never replicate. Fostoria used premium raw materials, ensuring their crystal remained brilliantly clear, free of major bubbles, and significantly heavier than cheap alternatives. These candleholders would be fun to have to have on a table or a mantle because they are neoclassical. See less
