Originally born in Tuttlingen, Germany to a long line of cabinetmakers, Hunzinger immigrated to the United States in 1855 and established a successful workshop in New York City. His emphasis on engineering rather than style, as well as his lack of interest in imitating historical designs, set him apart from his contemporaries. A clever and prolific inventor, Hunzinger was awarded 21 furniture patents in his lifetime, including one for a duplex spring mechanism, the label for which can be found on the underside of this rocking chair.

The distinctive chair back is composed of ascending "lollipop" spindles, the tallest of which feature lovely carved floral and foliate motifs. The seat cushion has been reupholstered with a rich blue velvet. The original upholstery tacks, though no longer in use, are included with the chair and can be viewed in the final photo. A remarkable piece of furniture and a must-have for antique collectors.

This is an antique item that shows signs of wear and tear. Scuff marks are visible on the wood; there is considerable fading on the front edge of the seat and atop the spindles, particularly the arm rests.
