A substantial Italian gilt chalkware wall pocket dating to 1978, modelled in an exuberant Baroque Revival vocabulary with strong Rococo and Hollywood Regency decorative appeal. The architectural composition centres on a basket-form wall pocket framed by deeply moulded scrollwork, acanthus foliage and an elaborate shell-and-plume crest.
A pair of putti flank the central pocket, their rounded figures integrated into the surrounding relief ornament. The mould-cast plaster construction is finished in antiqued gilt, with darker recesses enhancing the depth of the modelling and giving the piece a richly layered decorative surface.
At 19.5 inches high and weighing 6.15 lb, the wall pocket has substantial presence and works equally well as a wall planter, wall vase or purely decorative architectural accent. The integral hanging provision allows it to be displayed prominently in an entry, living room, bedroom or formal interior.
