This exceptional circa 1830 French Louis Philippe mantel clock combines early 19th-century horology with elaborate sculptural bronze craftsmanship. Artisan-made in France from solid bronze with a rich fire-gilt ormolu finish, the clock has an impressive architectural presence and beautifully preserved antique character.
The upper composition features a finely modelled romantic figural group of a seated woman and standing male figure arranged around the clock movement. Their expressive faces, carefully modelled hair, flowing garments and natural poses demonstrate the high level of sculptural detail associated with quality French bronzes of the period.
The circular clock face is integrated directly into the sculptural composition and surrounded by a finely detailed beaded gilt-bronze border. The dial displays Roman numerals, original-style hands and two winding apertures.
Beneath the figures is a substantial multi-tiered bronze base richly decorated in relief. Birds, foliage, flowers, fruit, garlands and scrolling classical ornament cover the surfaces, while the lower plinth is finished with bold foliate decoration and scroll-form feet. The extensive hand-chased detailing gives the clock visual interest from both close range and across a room.
