Impressive antique European cast iron parlor stove or heater, circa 1890, standing approximately 70 inches high and richly ornamented from its sculptural urn finial to its bold paw feet.
The tall cylindrical body features elaborate cast foliate decoration, pierced ornamental ironwork, multiple access doors and a substantial lower firebox. Particularly attractive are the deeply modeled relief decoration and beautifully proportioned vertical form, giving the stove considerable decorative impact even when displayed purely as an antique architectural object.
Likely Central European in origin. The precise country and foundry have not been identified; similar highly decorative cast iron parlor stoves were produced throughout Central and Northern Europe during the late 19th century.

Cast decoration remains strong and well defined. The stove appears complete, with doors, handles and other movable elements present and working. It is being offered in its current as-found, unpolished state, retaining the naturally aged iron surface and patina. Two tubes of traditional stove polish will be included with the stove for the buyer who prefers a darker, more polished appearance. Application of the polish should deepen the iron finish and further emphasize the detailed cast decoration. Although the doors and movable components are working, the stove has not been tested for safe operation as a heating appliance and should be inspected by a qualified professional before installation or use. COLLECTOR'S NOTE: Cylinder stoves like this were first introduced in Germany in the early 19th century and quickly became fashionable across Central Europe. Their tall vertical form not only radiated heat efficiently but also served as a focal point in bourgeois parlors, often rivaling fine furniture in decorative appeal. less
