Purchased from an estate several years back in … Read more Beautiful pair of antique American Victorian Eastlake armchairs dating to approximately 1875–1890. Purchased from an estate several years back in Hickory, North Carolina, this handsome pair showcases the architectural lines and restrained ornamentation characteristic of the Eastlake aesthetic.

The chairs feature richly finished dark walnut frames with distinctive incised and geometric carved details, elegantly fluted arm supports, turned legs, and beautifully shaped feet. The combination of linear carving, turned elements, and substantial hardwood construction gives these chairs wonderful Victorian character without the excessive ornamentation associated with earlier Victorian styles.

The wood appears to be solid walnut throughout the visible frame, with a deep, warm dark finish and attractive age-related patina. The chairs are exceptionally solid and sturdy and remain in very good overall condition.

The warm rust/terracotta-colored woven upholstery appears to be a later replacement, possibly dating to the mid-20th century. While the fabric has faded with age and use, it remains intact with no tears or rips. Decorative braided trim surrounds the upholstered seat and arms, adding to the period character.

One chair is slightly smaller in scale than its companion, but the two clearly complement one another as a pair and make a particularly appealing combination for a library, sitting room, bedroom, entry, or eclectic interior. See less
