Spanish faience majolica charger, hand painted with exuberant polychrome floral decoration in cobalt blue, green, rose, ochre and black on a warm cream ground. The deeply scalloped rim is outlined in cobalt, giving the plate a particularly strong profile when displayed on a wall.
Dating to circa 1960s, the charger reflects the traditional pottery of El Puente del Arzobispo, Toledo, a historic Spanish ceramic center known for its freely painted decoration and distinctive polychrome palette. The expressive brushwork and small decorative flourishes give the piece wonderful individuality.
This charger was one of five related Spanish plates purchased abroad at the same time by the original owners and displayed together as a wall collection. The other four have since sold.
COLLECTOR'S NOTE
The handwritten “Casas / P. Ar. / Cal” mark on the reverse appears to identify the Casas de la Cal pottery of El Puente del Arzobispo, Toledo, one of Spain's historic ceramic centers. The workshop is documented in the official Castilla-La Mancha artisan catalog, which notes that current artisan Francisco Casas de la Cal represents the sixth generation of his family of potters, continuing the traditional ceramic techniques of Puente del Arzobispo. That multigenerational history gives useful context to the charger’s freely painted floral decoration and characteristic polychrome palette.
