Rich in character and generous in scale, this distinctive map-top coffee table combines Old World influence with a bold, designer-refinished palette. Measuring 50 inches wide, the table has substantial presence without overwhelming a seating arrangement, making it an impressive focal point for a living room, library or collected interior.

The broad rectangular top has been refinished in our warm Old Chapel Satin Walnut™, allowing the natural wood grain and depth of the surrounding frame to remain visible. At its center is an inset leather panel depicting an antique-style world map, bordered by individual nailhead trim.

Viewed from a distance, the leather map reads primarily as a warm, tonal composition of tobacco, walnut and earthy brown. Upon closer inspection—or when illuminated by direct sunlight—subtle colored undertones become visible throughout the map scene, giving the surface considerably more nuance and visual depth than initially meets the eye.

The leather also displays a delicate, intermittent glitter-like or reflective effect under certain lighting conditions. It is unknown whether this subtle sparkle was incorporated into the original design or applied to the surface at a later date. We have chosen to retain it as part of the table’s existing history and unusual decorative character. The effect is most noticeable at close range and in direct light; under ordinary interior lighting, the top maintains its predominantly warm brown appearance.

To give the table greater architectural definition, the deep skirt and carved cabriole-style legs have been finished in satin Onyx Black™. Restrained, intentionally variegated aged-gold gilding highlights selected raised carvings on the legs and traces the smooth stepped molding beneath the skirt. The gilding is hand applied and softly irregular rather than uniform, contributing depth and an authentically aged designer finish. Nailhead trim appears only around the inset leather map panel; the base of the skirt features smooth molded detailing.

The contrast between the warm walnut top, graphic black base and softly burnished gold accents transforms this substantial table into a sophisticated statement piece. Its map imagery and carved profile lend themselves especially well to Grand Tour, Old World, traditional, Mediterranean and eclectic interiors, while the restrained black-and-walnut palette allows it to work beautifully in more transitional settings.

This is a refinished vintage piece rather than a factory-new reproduction. The finish has been designed to retain visual depth, evidence of age and the individual character of the original materials. Subtle variations in the wood, leather, gilding and decorative surface are intentional elements of its appeal.
