A small French dessert service with an unexpectedly modern mix of delicacy and color, this antique Limoges set pairs fine white porcelain with birds, flowering branches and scattered botanical motifs edged in warm iron red.
Made by J. Pouyat of Limoges, France, the six-piece service carries Pouyat marks along with a W wreath mark associated with the celebrated American retailer John Wanamaker. The decoration has a distinctly East Asian-influenced vocabulary: long-tailed birds perched among foliage, flowering branches, stylized blossoms and a slender vase filled with exuberant pink and yellow flowers.
The handled cake plate is the centerpiece, finished with pierced oval handles and painted red detailing. Five coordinating petite plates complete the service, making this an especially lovely set for cake, pastries or afternoon tea. When not in use, the pieces have enough graphic presence to work beautifully displayed in a cabinet or layered into a collected wall of antique porcelain.
