This exceptional circa 1860 French Louis XVI–style mantel clock garniture is a complete three-piece ensemble consisting of one monumental mantel clock and two matching candelabras. Crafted in richly detailed gilt bronze, the set combines refined neoclassical symmetry with the elaborate bronze casting associated with high-quality 19th-century French decorative arts.
The clock contains a movement stamped “AD Mougin – Deux Médailles,” identifying the renowned French clockmaker AD Mougin, while the original enamel dial is signed “Metais Bayeux.” The combination of the signed movement, signed dial and matching candelabras adds particular historical and decorative interest to the set.
The gilt-bronze clock is richly ornamented with classical Louis XVI motifs, including garlands, ribbons, scrolling foliage and an elegant urn-form finial. The original fire-gilt ormolu surface has not been re-gilded or refinished, allowing the naturally developed patina and warm variations in the gold finish to remain visible.
The two matching candelabras continue the same decorative language. Each features four scrolling candle arms terminating in finely modelled ram’s-head details. An original removable torch-form finial crowns each candelabra. When the torch is removed, an additional candle socket is revealed, allowing each candelabra to be displayed with either four candles and the decorative torch or with a total of five candles.
