This is an antique inscribed Glastonbury chair. An English, oak armchair in Gothic Revival taste, dating to the late Victorian period, circa 1900.
A superb example of the traditional Glastonbury form, this distinguished chair exhibits the Latin dedication as featured on the 16th century original.
Displays a desirable aged patina and in good order throughout
Quality oak presents fine grain interest and warm caramel hues
Wonderful exposed joints a bold feature of the Glastonbury form, as are the striking X-frame legs
Defined by the distinctive shaped arms, here accentuated with relief carvings
Latin motto relief carved from left to right down each arm and upon crest rail
Reads; Sit Laus Deo - Iohannes Arthurus - Monacus Glastonie - Salvet Eum Deus - Da Pacem Dñe
Translated to English, it honours John Arthur Thorne, the treasurer of Glastonbury Abbey
It broadly reads as; Praise Be to God, John Arthur, Monk of Glastonbury, May God Save Him, Lord, Give Peace
The original likely crafted to commemorate his passing during the dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII
