The seated position is called Half Lotus (Ardha Padmasana): Only one foot rests on top of the opposite thigh while the other foot tucks underneath, but with a slight alteration with Buddha's hands resting on the knee supporting his head. The sculpture is most likely made in Bali. Balinese inspired Buddhist sculpture portrays Buddha with detailed curled hair (called snail curls from the story of Buddha's life where he meditated under a Bodhi tree and snails protected his shaved head from the sun.) The warm golden-brown wood with a smooth finish, and expressive pose are characteristic of Balinese carvings, often made from sugar wood, or teak. See less
