Antique E.B. & J.E.L. Blue Willow Covered Butter Muffin Dish Original ;Ceramic Liner
Made in Staffordshire, England 1890s.
Approx. 4" High to top of Lid x 8 1/5" Wide Handle to Handle x 7 1/8" Square.
Exceptionally rare, late-Victorian 3-piece covered muffin or butter warming dish rendered in the iconic Blue Willow pattern.
This specialized tableware piece was produced in Staffordshire, England by Bourne Leigh / Elijah Brain Co. (stamped with the historical partnership initials E.B. J.E.L.).
Dating precisely between 1891 and 1900, the base features a crisp underglaze blue back stamp incorporating the British Royal Coat of Arms and the "England" country-of-origin mark.
What makes this specific set an elite find for transferware collectors is the presence of its original, unglazed biscuit ceramic insert/drainer. These porous liners were designed to hold ice or hot water underneath to regulate temperature while managing condensation. Because of their functional, fragile nature, the vast majority of these inserts were broken or discarded over the past 130 years.
The matching domed lid is beautifully detailed and features a distinctive sculpted lion/animal figural finial handle, adding immense visual character compared to standard knob tops.
Excellent Antique Condition. No structural cracks, major chips, or restorations to the glazed porcelain components. The transferware print remains deep, rich, and vibrant cobalt blue. The unglazed pottery insert remains fully intact with typical, light authentic discoloration/spotting from historical moisture use, validating its age and genuine antique status. Normal wear from age.
