The physical dimensions, low rim profile, and distinct double "touchmarks" or stamped marks on the reverse side are classic hallmarks of historic European utilitarian metalware. A nine-inch diameter plate with a shallow dish basin was the ubiquitous standard size for everyday dinner plates in middle-to-upper-class households. The flat, uniform rim style without heavy molded ribbing points directly to the neoclassical simplicity popular in the late Georgian and Biedermeier eras.
Pewterers stamped the underside of plates with official guild or personal marks to verify the alloy's metal purity and trace the maker. This plate features two of the most iconic historical symbols in European pewter production.
The left stamp, the standing angel with scales, depicts the Archangel Michael, a personification of Justice, standing and holding a sword in one hand and a scale in the other. On continental European pewter, this specific angel touchmark was an official quality guarantee, signifying the highest tier of purified tin alloy (Fein Zinn or Fine Pewter).
It also features initials “H” and “M” flank-stamped on either side of the scales, which indicate the specific workshop master or maker. The right stamp, depicting the Tudor Rose and Crown, originated in England in the 15th century as a mark of high quality. But by the 1700s, continental European guilds extensively adopted it. The text arched above the crown typically spells out the maker's surname or city region. Because the metal is soft and heavily weathered, the letters are partially rubbed away, though you can still make out the stylized lettering ending in what appears to be "H:M", duplicating the other stamp’s initials. They Identify the Master Pewterer, i.e., the maker or workshop owner who cast and struck the plate. Striking his personal initials into both touchmarks was the maker's way of permanently claiming legal liability against counterfeiting for the quality of his work.
The dark, mottled gray patina, extensive surface scratches, and slight rim warping are excellent indicators of genuine old pewter. Because historical pewter contains mostly tin blended with varying minor amounts of copper, antimony, and occasionally lead, it is a very soft metal that takes on a dull, satin sheen rather than the high polish of silver.
