Description: An exceptional and highly sought-after find for serious wildlife art collectors. This authentic 1970s independent studio piece by renowned nature artist Roslyn S. Carren predates her later mass-market commercial collaborations. It showcases the pinnacle of her early, hands-on studio craftsmanship. The sculpture features a stunning African Swallowtail butterfly, meticulously hand-sculpted and captured with incredible lifelike accuracy. The wings display a rich, vibrant palette of organic browns and warm yellows, showcasing genuine hand-painted glaze details, delicate brushwork, and subtle variations in pigment density that define her early independent work. The butterfly is permanently mounted onto a beautifully textured ceramic naturalistic base.
Unlike her later 1980s corporate figurines, this piece features the earliest, scarcest artist identification marks on the underbelly of the base: the uppercase block text "CARREN" stamp accompanied by her signature hand-incised studio swirl.
This piece is in Excellent Vintage Condition. The delicate porcelain wings, antenna details, and the structural base are completely free of chips, cracks, crazing, or repairs. The hand-painted glaze remains bright, glossy, and beautifully preserved.
About the Artist Roslyn S. Carren is a celebrated American wildlife artist best known for her highly detailed porcelain sculptures of animals, birds, and insects. While she gained widespread mainstream popularity in the 1980s designing exclusive global collections for major entities like the Franklin Mint, her early 1970s independent studio pieces are vastly different. Crafted in small, limited batches at her personal studio, these earlier works are prized by appraisers and collectors for their superior individual artistry, rare hallmark stamps, and low production numbers.
With its warm, earthy tones of brown and yellow, this timeless sculpture serves as a sophisticated statement piece. It is a perfect addition to any setting, blending seamlessly into traditional, mid-century modern, or eclectic interior decor.
