This listing is for A Pair ( 2) incredible mahogany chairs! I see these in a Bahamian front hallway, a fabulous cream and dark wood guest suite or in a fabulously collected great living room!
An exceptional and highly serious pair of early 19th-Century English Regency mahogany side chairs (circa 1810-1820), designed in the iconic "Edwards' Library Pattern" and directly attributed to the prestigious workshop of Gillows of Lancaster and London. In spite of their seriousness they should be in a whimsical tropical location!
Purchased from a prominent Ohio estate collection with only the most impeccable antiques, these chairs exhibit extraordinary period craftsmanship and remain in an unbelievable state of preservation. The frames feature a meticulously carved spiral rope-twist crest rail-a classic British Regency design hallmark popularized after Admiral Nelson's victory at Trafalgar in 1805. The refined geometric "T-bar" backrest and sweeping, elegant saber front legs are carved from high grade solid West Indian mahogany, showing beautiful natural grain and an authentic aged patina that you rarely see anymore.
Most remarkably, the tight, traditional 7 series hand caning is original and intact, displaying a rich, deep golden-amber honey oxidation. Flip the chairs over to reveal the definitive proof of 19th-century craftsmanship: a hand-chiseled recess channel along the inner rail where the individual cane loops are hand tied through separate, hand-drilled holes. The amazing part is that despite their age and construction they feel infinitely more sturdy than comparable chairs made with cane today. A testament to the brilliance of the hand weaving and quality construction that has lasted 200 years.
They are free of modern machine splines or uniform factory saw marks, this set is a masterclass in early artisan cabinetry. This listing is for 2 chairs but there are 3 sets available or a total of 6 chairs if interested and a discount will be considered for all 3 sets.
Given their age, these chairs are remarkably sturdy as mentioned. They appear compact and delicate but they feel very solid. They are ideal for an elegant front hallway, flanking a formal console, or as a decorative statement in a guest suite or library.

For 200 years old they feel strong, sturdy and are in perfect shape with no damage to the caning incredibly. The pictures are an accurate representation of the condition. I think the patina is incredible and appears to have grown more beautiful with age. They are truly special. less
